the care and keeping of your maine coon cat

Was He A Maine Coon?

by Valerie
(Lynchburg, VA)

I just lost my 11 year old cat Flame 2 weeks ago.

I'm looking to adopt another cat with the same characteristics. He was broad chested, fur under the paws, 18 pounds with a small voice, bushy tail and a dog like personality.

Was he a Maine Coon mix?

Hi Valerie,

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is a hard time. Flame was a good looking boy.

He reminds me of my cat Clyde. He was the same color with a huge tail, and he really had the same personality of any Maine Coon. I figured he was not a Maine Coon, I was just lucky to have such a special boy. Losing him was extra hard. When we were ready to get our current cats, I wanted to be sure they would be very much like this. That's what brought me to Maine Coons!

I see Flame had a shaggy coat, and slight tufts on the tips of his ears. He had the look I would expect from a Maine Coon mix.

So if you want another cat with that great personality like Flame had, a Maine Coon or Maine Coon mix is a great way to go! Of course, every cat has an individual personality, so you'll want to get some info on a new cat's personality and traits before committing.

Hope your new friend brings you lots of smiles,

~Carrie

Your Flame looks like such a handsome boy, and sounds like he had a personality to match. I just lost my fur baby, Sunny, who was a lighter orange than Flame. Sunny was also only 11 years old - too soon.

Not a day goes by that I don't think of Sunny. He was the best, and because of his awesome personality, I specifically started looking into adopting a Maine Coon. I found a Maine Coon kitten and named him Hunter. He is his own little furry person, and I love him dearly.

I wish you the best, and hope you find another friend who will hold another place in your heart, right next to Flame :-)

Waiting 6 months is up to you... I got Ivan first about a month after King Lewie past on. Even though they look much alike I don't compare Ivan to Lewie. Then about a month after that we got Makani and again we don't compare... just love 'em. Again sorry for your loss. Good luck when ever you chose to adopt another ...

He was a coon

He has all the characteristics my coon had. You Have my sympathy, I lost Nero when he was 10, from cancer.

It's good to wait about 6 months before getting a replacement cat. Otherwise, you'll end up expecting your new cat to be like your old one.

So Sorry..

SO sorry to hear about your loss, I too had just lost my King Lewie (profile here) in Nov to cancer and a day doesn't go by that I don't think about him. Since then we have adopted Ivan and Makani (both also have profiles here).

Ivan is our mix guy and Makani is our pure breed Maine Coon. They are my guys, I don't know what I'd do without them and the laughter and companionship the give us.

I hope you find another great cat, not to take the place of Flame but to give you laughter, comfort and companionship for many years to come.

Hi Valerie,

I'm sorry you lost Flame. He has a face like my orange kitty Ichigo, but the body style is a little different.

Ichigo was identified as a DMH at the Humane Society, but we're pretty sure he's a Siberian; 2 months after he was adopted in 2007, Cat Fancy ran an article featuring that breed, and one of the poster cats looked exactly like him.

And in reading about the personality, it sounded like they'd been spying on our crazy cat. :)

There are similarities between Main Coon, Siberian, and Norwegian Forest cats, although I understand they aren't necessarily related to each other. Based on pictures I've seen, Norwegian Forests seem to have rounder heads than the other 2breeds, so I'd say Flame could be either a Maine Coon or a Siberian.
