Nutmeg - Sadly Missed

by Mike Cavanagh
(Australia)

This is Nutmeg – “Meg” or “Moosta”. First and only Maine Coon I’ve owned. Sadly she died just a few weeks ago – gosh, getting teary now just writing this! I’ve had about 15 cats and four dogs in my life (plus a duck and some fish!).

As much as I’ve loved them all, this little girl was something extraordinary. Special doesn’t even begin to describe her – but I suspect all you folks who have (are owned by!) Maine Coons can just say “Yes, we know!”.

nutmeg catMeg - last photo

Totally trusting, loyal, smart as, and would talk whenever one of us felt like a conversation.

Little big shadow to follow me every-where; not demanding, just happy to 'hang together'. But also absolutely OK with spending quality lap time.

She was just over five and a half – far too young, and far too short a time to have shared with her. One day I will look to get another Maine Coon.

It will take a while though for me to get up the courage, and Meg will never be ‘replaced’.

Sorry about the quality of the photo of her on the path – just didn’t think to take photos when she was always around.

But this is the best that shows a little at least of who she was.

So sorry
by: Anonymous
So sorry about Nutmeg. The lingering grief in the loss of a Coonie is so hard. Meg looks like the female version of my Eddie who I lost one year ago. I related to all your descriptions of your beloved kitty.

Many thanks
by: MikeC - Nutmeg's 'owned one'
Sincere thanks again everyone! And my sincere sympathies for those who have also shared their losses here.

It's been almost 9 months since Meg died. I think I'm getting around to seriously considering another little big cat in my life.

Shifting house in a few months, and I think new house will need Maine Coon-ness to warm it. The hardest part about moving house will be leaving Meg in the back yard, under the Jacaranda tree.

But as George Harrison so aptly said it: all things must pass.

When (not if!) new Coon-ness arrives I will post here.

Many many thanks again all.
cheers

RIP Nutmeg - I understand and so sorry for your loss
by: Liza
So very sorry about you losing your special Nutmeg, she was very young. What a beautiful cat you had. Maine Coons are an extraordinary kind of cat.

I totally understand how you feel. My little Leo (Miss Leo), was only 5yrs and 4 mths when she got pancreatis disease, cancer and bands in blood stream. Leo got so sick so fast. She was my everything and "owned me".

I loved her soooo very much and miss her deeply. It was the saddest day of my life when I made the decision to put her out of pain. She was such a proud cat and I knew she didnt want to be suffering.

That day was Feb 12/2013, still feels like yesterday. She is buried at my friends farm and I visit her often. My home is covered with pictures of her.

My heart is with you....

Sorry for your loss
by: MJ
I just wanted to say she was very beautiful, and anyone who ever loss a dear friend as a main coon cat knows how big of a hole it leaves in us.

I've had two of them in my life, Jesse my first one was a brown tabby coon and he lived up to 10 yrs and ended up with kidney disease.

When I took him in to put him to sleep he licked my hand and put his head on it as if he knew he was leaving, I still miss the big fella.

Last winter my other big guy who was only part coon but had all the coon personality ended up with liver cancer, I cried so badly when the medication didnt work vet said I could get him surgery but he could not guarantee his quality of life afterwards.

I'm a cancer patient and I know how painful cancer can be and since my big guy gave me love and happiness for most his life I could no longer be selfish and allow him to suffer any longer.

He died end of Jan, Until now I swore id never get another one because its like losing a member of my family every time i say goodbye to one.

After seeing your baby girl I realize at this point in my life i need one to be my companion and I've decided to call the breeder I know and order my kitten for next batch to be is due xmas time,

Thank you for making me realize that after healing a loss we can still go on and find another companion (furry that is) to accommodate your life again

So sorry for your loss
by: Marg
Mike I am so sorry for your loss. I'm sure that you treasure the time that you did have with your precious little Nutmeg.

I know what you mean about the qualities of the Maine Coon as my Charlie Brown has them also even though he is Maine Coon X.

My boy has lost his beautiful long coat due to cancer, I'm not sure how much longer I have with him but I treasure every second. Take care ok.

Sadly Missed kitty

These lovely Maine Coons really get to your heart, don't they. They are just so sweet and so very real and with a LOT of intelligence.

I know what your mean, too. I lost my Priscilla (Prissie)last fall. I held her while she was put to sleep. I had to do that just to make her (and me) feel better.

She was just so sick and she was not going to ever get well, so that was the only humane thing to do, but I do have her ashes and a very pretty picture of her and a little red rosebud on top of her crypt.

I STILL could almost weep over her loss. She was just so sweet and responsive.

So sorry for your loss
by: Jenny
Mike,
I'm so very sorry for your loss. Nutmeg sounds like an incredible kitty. I got teary reading your tribute. I, too, suddenly and unexpectedly lost my best buddy, Toby, in April at only 6 yrs old.

Tobes was a Maine Coon mix rescue that was my best friend and constant companion. His loss devastated me and it's not much easier even 4 months later.

Know that I and others share your grief and I hope you can take comfort knowing that your Meg is playing happily at the Bridge waiting for her Mike to join her someday.

Be well,
Jenny

Many thanks all for your kind words and encouragement! Rest assured, there will be another Maine Coon in my life - but I'm happy not to rush it. I figure when it happens, it will happen. Sincere thanks again - much appreciated.

your Nutmeg x
by: Kris
I too agree the photo of Nutmeg on the settee is wonderful. You should have it framed x

Yes we all love our pets and the pain they bring when they leave us but she will be waiting at the rainbow bridge, playing. Once she sees you as they say she will turn and run to you and she will always be in your heart forever thats the main thing.

I too now feel tearful as you say we all love our pets and could not live without them so one day another little one will come along and give you its own habits and love. So sorry Nutmeg had to go so soon very sad from Kris

So Sorry ...
by: Caroline (UK)
So sorry for your loss of Nutmeg, Mike. She was beautiful. Thank you for the reminder that we need to make the effort to record our pets while they're still with us.

The photo of her on the path is lovely, and I particularly like the one of her on the sofa - our cats do like to get into some strange positions in the name of comfort, don't they!

Hope you do get another 'Coonie' some day. Of course, they never replace the ones who've gone before, they're just themselves, instead.

I am so sorry for your loss. I just lost one of my 4 just 3 weeks ago and I still do not have a day where I do not think about him often. You will see Meg at the rainbow bridge someday

Nugmeg - RIP
by: Dennis & Anita
Our hearts go out to you, Mike. Take life slow and take care of yourself... Maine Coons are special! We lost Kato, a rescue Maine Coon mix last October.

While we've been blessed with two more Maine Coons Sherlock and Dr.Watson, Kato lives on in our hearts! Still miss our furry angel...

Sharing Your Grief!
by: Karen Conner-Beck
I am so sorry, Mike, on the loss of Nutmeg! I have a Coonie, Dozer, who is 11 and I found him on the street at approx age 2 1/2, so I missed his whole kittenhood.

I found him almost one year to date of putting my last girl, Tiger, to sleep at age 17. So I am sharing your grief! You will be owned by another Coonie, and when you are ready, there is one out there who needs you desperately!

If you need a fellow Coonie lover to talk to, email me anytime at dozerandkaren69@gmail.com.

Very sorry about your Nutmeg
by: Stephanie
So very sorry you lost your little girl. We lost our beautiful Archie boy at the age of 12 very suddenly this April.

He was a talker, a helper, a bed warmer, all the things that a Maine Coon should be. I hope you find another Maine Coon moose cat to love.

To Owner Of Nutmeg
