Press Release:

Purebred Cats Need Homes, Too: Consider Purebred Cat Rescue During Adopt-A-Cat Month

June is National Adopt A Cat Month. Shelters are overrun with homeless domestic housecats, but many purebred cats are awaiting adoption as well.

June 11, 2010: National Adopt-A-Cat Month marks the beginning of a busy season for animal shelters worldwide. Among these homeless domestic housecats are many purebred cats as well. There are many such purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for adoption.

Fans of the Maine Coon Cat may be surprised to learn that many of these popular cats end up in the care of Maine Coon Cat Rescue organizations. "I was taken aback when I found out that not all Maine Coons are living the good life in a nice home," remarks Carrie Profenno, President of Maine-Coon-Cat-Nation.com. "There was a time when I thought nearly all adoptable, homeless cats were of the Domestic Housecat variety."

During the month of June and beyond, the overpopulation of these shelters is an ongoing problem. During this time of increased awareness, some may hold back due to their fondness for a certain breed. They should know that even purebred cats may be found in local shelters. There are purebred rescue organizations with branches reaching to nearly every corner.

"Maine Coon Cats are wonderful family pets," states Profenno. "Maine Coons are notoriously friendly, funny, and have a very gentle demeanor. They are generally great with other pets and especially with children."

According to the American Humane Society, "Approximately 4 million cats end up in shelters every year, including thousands born every spring and summer during kitten season." Among these millions of unwanted but adoptable cats are Domestic Housecats, mixed breed cats, and even purebred cats.

"Anyone who is interested in a particular breed should learn about it before proceeding with adoption. Making the right choice ensures a lasting relationship," adds Profenno.

Currently Maine Coons are the second most popular cat breed. They are America's only native cats, with many loyal fans. They are known for having a dog-like nature, endearing personalities, and for their unique voice.
