Our Rescue Mister Charlie

By: Heather in Parkersburg, WV

Charlie Charlie Charlie

A dear friend of ours, who does rescues in the Columbus, OH area, found this gorgeous boy.

He had apparently been abandoned while still a kitten/young adult, and had been fixed by a trap and neuter, as his ear is clipped.

She fostored him for about a year, then decided we would be a perfect forever home for him (she is my husband's friend, and decided this after we got together. She could SMELL cat lady on me, lol.). Of course we took him in.

He was extremely reticent and shy at first, for a good while - now, he rules the house! He wakes me every morning with kisses, and talks his head off.

I love love love him!

Safest dog on the block!

By: Valerie Wynne in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Ruger was a rescue that my mother-in-law got from the Winnipeg Humane Society two years ago.

She is no longer able to care for him, so he has moved in with us and our 3 dogs.

Not one hiss or scratch, ever. He loves nothing more than to be outside with his pack.

I had always been a dog person until I got this little guy. He is so special to me : )

Shadow Prince

By: Colleen Heard in Sydney Australia

Shadow Shadow Shadow Shadow

Shadow is 9 years old and weighs 10 kg. he was born in Cape Town South Africa, when we immigrated to Australia 10 years ago , of course he came with us, also 3 other cats and a dog.

Shadow is a brown classic, with high white.

He has been in a number of cat shows, and people are always fascinated by his size.

He is my best friend, and follows me everywhere. Sleeps on my bed and when my husband goes to work early, he lies with his head on hubby's pillow.

He loves cheese and cat nip.

By: Deborah Shany in Toronto, ON, Canada

Doyle came to us at just under two years old. He will be three in March and weighs in at 18 pounds.

He wakes us up each morning at about 4:30am by knocking over everything on the washroom counter. If that doesn't work, he starts flushing the toilet. Next comes the paw on our noses to see what's happening. We tried to keep the bedroom door closed but he scratches on that. HE JUST KEEPS GOING UNTIL WE WAKE UP !!!!!

Doyle does not purr, however, he grunts and very seldom meows.

He loves people and always makes his appearance when we have company.

He is a great bird cat, and has caught 3 birds on the balcony this summer. The first one did not make it but we managed to save the other two.

Doyle was adopted from a shelter by a couple but the woman did not like him at all and we find him very submissive.

He has a great big appetite and we feed him when he wants to be fed so he gets little helpings all day (always dry food on the side).

He is very sweet, handsome and we love him very much.

My first Maine Coon!
This is Paige, she is 9 months old!

By: Kelly Callan in Northeast Phila, PA

Page Page Page Page

I have never had a Coon before. Quite frankly, when I adopted this cute little kitten, I STILL didn't know! It wasn't until people started commenting on how "coon-like" she was that I started investigating.

As she grew bigger, bigger and became apparent that my baby was a Coon! She IS different from any other cat I have had. I have always had short hair domestic cats.

I named her Page after Jimmy Page. (we are musicians, my dog's name is Zeppelin) From the start I could tell this kitten was going to be different. She is spunky, flirty, bitchy, fussy, curious, fearless, playful, spiteful, energetic and loving.

I adore her, but will admit that she is a handful at times! She greets me from the moment I wake. She may not always want to be sitting on your lap, but she will certainly prefer to be in the same room as you, usually trying something to get into!

She demands attention, and like the lil, loving brat she is, she gets it!! I wouldn't trade her in for a million dollars. She makes me happy and my house a home.

Dusty, The Love Of My Life!

By: Jack Thompson in Scottsdale, Arizona

Dusty Dusty Dusty Dusty

The day after Christmas 2 years ago my cat, JD passed away. I was heart broken as I had raised him from 1 week old and he was with me 21 years.

Well, about 2 months went by and I decided to go to the Humane Society to adopt another baby kitten. I wanted a little one just like my JD, so I could have the same experience again.

As I'm looking at the kittens my neighbor who went with me came from around a corner and said "Look over here. You've got to see this". Well I went and looked and in the bottom of this small cage was the biggest cat I had ever seen. And he was beautiful!

I had never heard of a Maine Coon before and the volunteers were quick to educate as to just how wonderful they are. I still had my heart set on a little kitten but just had to meet this big beautiful animal.

So my friend and I went into the greeting room and waited for him to be brought in. A volunteeer opoened the door and deposited this huge, beautiful ball of fur in my lap. He immediately started purring and wanted pet. We spent the next 5 minutes just snuggling.

My neighbor said "Put him down and lets se what he does." I put him down and he went over to my friend and jumped up in his lap amd started purring. I had never seen such a friendly cat and right then and there decided he was coming home with me.

We've been together now for over 2 years and I couldn't be happier. He's the friendliest cats I've ever had. When friends come over he insists on being the center of attention. He will go from person to person and spend some time with each one. Here's a pic of my best friend.

Penney Layne

By: Monica Baguchinsky Lunn in northeast United States

Penney Layne

A great photo of her markings

Penney Layne Penney Layne Penney Layne

Penney came to me while I was staying in Washington state from a woman who found out (too late) she was allergic to her. Poor thing needed grooming desperately since the woman couldn't even touch the cat.

She was just turning a year old when she came to live with me. After a trip to the groomers (she ended up getting shaved) she decided that I was indeed HER person and we've been best friends ever since.

She came with me in the moving truck (riding up front with me, not in the back with the furniture!) when I left WA to move back to the northeast states.

She did great in the vehicle and was fine with all the different hotel rooms along the way, although unfortunately she did pick up fleas in one of them and had to be treated as soon as we got to our destination.

She could possibly be mixed with another breed, but we are unsure of what it might be. She definitely has the tufts of hair on her ears and the cute furry paws so common in Maine Coons.

She has the wonderful Maine Coon temperment and is proving to also have the size.

Penney is turning 3 this June and is an extremely happy and well-loved feline family member. She is an indoor cat, but is allowed outside for photo opportunities.

Cougar Roderick aka Little Man from Florida

By: Lisa in Blountstown Florida

Cougar Cougar

Cougar came to us last April. He was born January 10, 2013 and is the most adorable cat on the planet!

Cougar knows how to "give love", sit pretty, stand tall and much more. He is a very smart little boy. His best friend is our dog Belle. They will even sleep with one another.

Despite most Maine Coons not being lap lovers he enjoys being held like a baby and sleeps in my arms like a baby. He shares a pillow with me at night and sleeps soundly until morning.

Cougar is such a sweetie and everyone who has met him now also wants to own a Maine Coon.

The Magnificent Henry Hudson

By: Leslie in Larchmont, NY

I have had cats my whole life and when we lost our dear Smokey at 19, I started looking for the right cat for our family.

Shelter after shelter, I just didn't find one that seemed right for us. One weekend, we were going away to a town called Hudson, NY (we live in Westchester County) and on a whim, I asked my husband to bring the cat carrier.

I'd checked online and saw there was a Humane Society nearby and thought we might take a look. I'd actually seen Henry online and thought he was gorgeous, but looks aren't everything.

So we went there on Monday and as soon as I walked in, the volunteer said to me, "If you're looking for a great cat, look at Catsby!" (That was Henry's original name which we changed.)

The first thing I noticed was the amazing ruff around his neck and his beautiful eye markings. He was so soft and circled around me. I knew he was the one. So we took him home and he's been an unbelievably wonderful addition to our lives.

I didn't know much about Maine Coons and he certainly fits the descriptions I've found here and elsewhere. He's always near us but not a lap cat (except on rare occasions which we cherish!). He's curious and helpful, wanting to be involved in everything.

He has that funny trilling purr. He loves being up high - on windowsills, tops of boxes and of course inside them, too. He's different than my other cats in that he really has his own interesting life that intersects with ours.

He's always looking around, playing, carrying his toys up the stairs and down. He is just so beautiful with that amazing fur and light green eyes. His gentle personality and insatisable curiosity are fun to be around. It's so cute how he lies on his back (why do they do that??)and such a pleasure that he doesn't scratch anything but his scratching post.

We renamed him Henry Hudson in honor of the town where we found him, Hudson, NY. He's perfect and I'm so honored to live every day with this amazing Maine Coon Cat.

Beau, Mature And Dignified (some of the time)

By: Roberta in Victoria

Beau is older and wiser and would like a respect from his brothers. They don't always seem to know that he is a special guy with special needs.

The new kitty just keeps jumping him and Beau is forced to mete out the discipline with one of his massive paws.

He has maintained his love of the printed word, is very finicky about what he eats (fresh salmon? Maybe another time.)

When he has a restless or playful fit, the thunder of him on the wood floors is astounding.

Sammy Davis Jr.

By: Ryan in Michigan

Sammy is a Coon Hybrid. His father was a Maine Coon, his mother was not. His siblings had a different father and look totally different.

By: Kristi Walker in La Porte, TX

My handsome one year old. He likes to practice his ninja skills on unsuspecting guests, jumping out of nowhere and then tearing all over the house!

When he's not being a wildly rambunctious kitty he likes to have his underarms scratched. He'll stretch his arms completely straight, over his head to give me better access. I was lucky to have been given him by a relative with a toddler.

He was a bitey kitty which wasn't good for the baby and so he came home with me. I know I rescued him, but it feels like it's the other way around.

Our Boy TJ

By: Andrew Tanner in Yeovil, England

We've always wanted a coon and we're lucky to get a 4 year old ex stud cat who is wonderful but very shy.

He gets on well with our other cats but by far the largest and heaviest but wished we had him from a kitten.

Rescued her from a vet-tech school, bout a year ago. Words cant say how much she has taught me!

Eddy Bear

By: Nik in Aus

Eddy Eddy

Eddy Bear is 2 years old and does NOT stop growing. He doesn't meow but rather squeaks or speaks quietly.

He makes close eye contact and acts as though he is having a conversation with us. He rolls over when my daughter tells him to and fetches his food pouches from the laundry.

He can open doors by pushing down on the handles. He has a long mane and weird tufts of fur coming out of his massive paws. He has round blue eyes.

One of them seems to have a defect....a black spot that we have been told is harmless. He also has a 'funny' ear. His previous owners found him and when they moved interstate we took him in.

Purchased from a pet shop

By: Geoff McIntyre in Syracuse, NY

Gadget Gadget Gadget Gadget

He's 2 years old and very affecionate and playful with me. Constantly talking, purring and licking me.

I don't have too many people over but when I do he always hides. If my guests can get to him he enjoys them pet him as long as he's in his safe spot.

The physical traits seem to be there according to this page. The furry toes, pointy ears, body shape. He also has a curly tuft of fur behind the base of each ear.

He bites me when I pet him sometimes which is new to me. Not hard or violent, just a gentle bite down and then lets me continue petting.

Kit Kat

Kit Kat

Kit Kat

Kit Kat Kit Kat Kit Kat Kit Kat

Kit Kat is the most talkative cat I have ever owned! I got him as a kitten 13 years ago and he talks to me every day. I always thought he was just big for a tabby until someone said he is probably Maine Coon. He weighs 18 pounds, is 13 inches tall (paw to shoulder) and 23 inches long, head to butt (tail not included)

He has quite the personality. He can give you glances that tell you exactly what he thinks and he has quite the vocal tones. He will say hello to us alot and will meow constantly if there is a conversation going on and he is being ignored.

If you are in the room with him, he has to be next to you. If he does hang out on the floor he mostly lays on his back with his paws up in the air.

He is definitely unique and definitely loved!

Wick (left), with his little buddy Sophie

Wick Wick

Wick is almost 8 now, a dainty twenty-pounder with snowshoe paws, glorious whiskers and a triple-thick coat. I've suspected he has at least some Maine Coon in his genetics because of his size and looks as well as his disposition.

His ear tufts are less marked as an adult, but as a baby (he was rescued by highway at about 6 weeks old) he had HUGE white ear fluff, and longer black ear-tip tufts than now as an adult. His tail and "puffy pants" are exceptionally luxurious :)

He's fetched (untrained) from the time he was a baby; and he loves, loves, loves water. Playing in his bowl, drinking & playing in the bath-tub. Water gets all over his surface coat, but he could care less LOL! (plus, it almost never sinks through to the skin because his undercoats are SO dense).

He loves to combine his favorite things (toys + water), putting his latest favorite toys (paper wad, ribbon, knitted mouse -- ew, soggy!) INTO his waterbowl for me to find.

He's an absolute love-bug with me; if I'm sitting or lying down, he is ON my hip like a dog. He responds to hand signals to come (very little training) when called in addition to verbal signals. He is very gregarious and silly when I'm present and with a few select people he knows well; he is "polite" to guests in the house, but they clearly have to have my approval before he wants to approach them.

It's earned him the nickname "Chicken of the Sea" with a few friends who know how shy he is with strangers when he is REALLY so people-oriented once he knows you.

He bonds very easily with other cats -- in fact, he is the most "needy" cat I've ever owned. When my older cat (a Persian mix) died, he grieved and grieved; he has two new buddies now -- one is a bit more stand-offish, but the latest is a kitten to whom he has become a very patient "mama" (his goofy, gentle, sweet disposition is absolutely remarkable.)

Pugsley Pugsley Pugsley Pugsley

I got Pugsley when he was 5 yrs old from a lady I worked with. She had no idea what breed he was or when his birthday was. They had just picked a date in June of 1999. So this year he is going to be 15.

She was getting rid of him because he was going to the bathroom anywhere her daughter's boyfriend would sit. She was just going to throw him outside. So I told her I would take him.

I love animals too much to see him being thrown outside. He is declawed and neutered. I have thought he was a Maine Coon since I saw him. He is an 18 lb big baby. He loves to be held and loved when he wants and when he is done he lets you know. He talks to me when he is hungry or wants treats.

Never had a cat that was so vocal and drinks water like he does. Loves to be brushed and sleep with me at night. So what does everyone think is he Maine Coon?

By: Lauren in Pennsylvania

Stormy Stormy Stormy Stormy

We got Stormy from a friend of the family who we'd gotten the dog we had at the time (since passed :( ), as they'd found kittens and were sort of our good luck charm for pets.

He and his siblings were found in the Poconos of PA, and my sister adopted his brother. The brother is a short haired red tabby, but our little one poofed out almost immediately!

The woman we adopted them from said that the mother was calico, though not if she was short or long haired (they managed to capture her and get her fixed, but then she broke through a window screen and ran off before they could try to home her).

He took to the dog like she was his mother, and for as long as they were together, they were best friends. He even insisted on drinking with her out of the oversized waterbowl, which he still uses now the same way, front paws on the rim.

Now, at nine months old, storm is a playful and affectionate little boy, and growing every day. His paws are huge, and he's just over ten lbs.

He loves to cuddle and talk with us, and is very outgoing and maybe a little too smart at times - he brought us the laser pointer to play two days after we brought him home, and loves to fetch and play in his water.

Friends who have cats, upon first seeing him, have remarked how much of a coonie he looks, just after a look at his poofy tail.

All that got me curious, and while he doesn't quite have a mane yet, he does have some handsome mutton chops. What do you think, is our little boy a partial Coon?

By: Chelsea in North Carolina

Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy

I noticed Tommy was different from any other cat I had owned before early on. He grew rapidly and by about 7 months of age he was 9 pounds. He is now a year and growing larger.

I notice he has white tufts of fur between his paws, as well as uneven shaggy hair. He also has a long bushy tail which most guests compare to a racoon tail and white wisps of hair on the tips of his ears.

He is extremely playful, much like a dog, and started playing fetch with me, without any training, around 6 months of age. Tommy is the most vocal cat I've ever owned.

He meows when I greet him, say his name, ask him if he wants something, or when I talk to him in general. He also randomly makes chirping noises while playing or when communicating with me.

Overall, Tommy is the smartest and friendliest cat I have ever owned.

By: Melora in Idaho

He's gone, unfortunately, but I would like to know if he was part Maine Coon.

He had HUGE feet. He wasn't even half grown when he was 8 months old. The next year at 20mos he was considerably larger.

He had a very heavy ruff. He weighed about 12 lbs. He meowed a lot at mealtime. He had long tufts in his ears. He had a fluffy tail.

I think he looked a lot like a Maine Coon.
